Leaving your home country and moving overseas is a big decision. If you are thinking of moving for work, even short term, or perhaps emigrating permanently to start a new life, there is plenty to consider. One thing is sure each country is unique in its own way. From the climate and the cost of living to the local laws, lifestyle and culture, each country can be defined by its experience, outlook and set of values. So, how do you make the right choice?
In some cases your options may be limited by work opportunities and visa requirements however it certainly pays to do some research and know what to expect before you pack your bags and head for the airport.
Thankfully, surveys like the Expat Insider survey provide insights from those who have already made the move. Conducted by the InterNations expat community, this annual survey gives the lowdown on which countries offer the best experience for expats. The survey addresses various criteria like whether the local population is welcoming, ease of adjusting to the country’s culture and language and the general ease of integration. All of these factors help in making an informed decision about moving to a new country.
The 2018 survey covered 68 countries and Bahrain took the top spot for the second consecutive year based on the Ease of Settling In Index. While there are a few challenges for non-native speakers it is worth noting that 53% of Bahrain’s 1.4 million inhabitants are foreign nationals1.
Mexico ranks second when it comes to ease of settling in however it cinches the top spot for friendliness. In third place is Costa Rica, which also rates highly for the warmth and friendliness of its population. The 2018 survey records Spain, Colombia and Ecuador making it to the list of top 10 countries in the Ease of Settling In Index.
The survey also highlights Australia and Greece as rising in popularity however it must be noted that Australia does pose a language problem for those who don’t speak English. Language skills are less important in Greece and both countries rank high in terms of friendliness and culture. Another gainer, in 2018, is Israel which has risen up the ranks owing to its friendliness.
Wherever you choose to live, financial considerations will influence how you feel about your host country. The local cost of living and your income as an expat in a foreign country are key factors that must influence your decision to move to a foreign country. However you may need to take into account the fact that you would be sending money to your family and friends in your home country. If so, the remittance experience will vary depending on the local transfer channels available in the country.
